This is written about Microsoft Corp., Yahoo! Inc., and Google Inc.

Microsoft Corp, the world's largest software group, is still open to a partnership with search engine giant Yahoo Inc., Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said on Wednesday.

"We remain open to a partnership with Yahoo," Mr. Ballmer told a seminar at the Cannes Lion 2009 advertising festival.

Asked if a deal could be sealed in the next year, he said: "Who knows?"

Mr. Ballmer did not give further details.

Microsoft offered to pay up to US$47.5-billion for Yahoo early last year, but was rebuffed by Yahoo's former leadership.

There has been talk of a partnership between Microsoft and Yahoo in recent months, but no deal has emerged. Microsoft is also trying to challenge Google Inc. with its own new search engine called Bing.

Mr. Ballmer also gave a cautious view over the prospects for the world economy, which has been hit by the financial crisis that arose from bank losses on home loans and complex debt instruments.

"I don't think we're in a recession," he said.

"I don't assume there is a recovery. I think we reset to a lower level and the world economy will grow again from this reset level."

Mr. Ballmer said he was not sure if a full recovery would occur in one year or in two years from now.

Asked whether he was worried about a pending European Union antitrust ruling about bundling browsers with operating systems, Mr. Ballmer replied: "We comply with EU law."

Seriously Microsoft, either make a move, or don't. Yahoo is still a force and its only natural for them to take out Yahoo, if not completely. I dont think any uses Microsoft search or Kumo or whatever they are calling their new search engine. Take em out before they strike a deal with someone else like Google

I believe we will see some sort of deal by year's end. But then again, who knows. Funny how Jerry Yang just kind of disappeared...

we'll see what happens in their Annual Meeting. So far, that Carol lady isnt doing much for Yahoo either. She might get lucky and strike a decent deal with Microsoft though, seeing as how Yang turned down a 47 billion dollar offer

LOL, its already happened yesterday guys. Not much in the meeting, your basic "what our plans are" etc. etc. Some of the ideas were retooling the site's main page and cutting or selling some of Yahoo's other web properties.

Never really discussed anything with Microsoft but I suspect something big is about to happen sooner than later. Both parties said that they are willing to talk so one can only assume they are already talking
